Gardeners Tool Sharpening

Sharpening Garden Hand Tools 

Date: 05/13/2017 (Sat.)

 Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm 

Location: White Barn Farm, 458 South St., Wrentham, MA 02093. in the right side of the barn. Park at the barn and find Brian inside.

Cost: $45 

Class Size: 5 person minimum to run the workshop. 12 person limit.

Guest Expert: Brian Huckins

Brian Huckins has been working for years with sharp tools as a woodworker, as a gardener and farmer, as a mechanic, and as a blacksmith and metal fabricator. 

Abe Lincoln said, “If I had six hours to cut down a tree, I’d spend the first four sharpening my axe.”

In this session, we will look at some common garden tools and how to select, sharpen and maintain them.  Sharpening of several kinds of tools will be demonstrated.  

*If time permits, you can sharpen a hand tool that you bring.

An outline of the session:

Overview of types of tools

  •  Digging/hoeing versus cutting tools
  • Single bevel
  • Double bevel
  • Saw-toothed tools  (we won’t discuss sharpening, including chain saws

?Sharpening specific tools:

  • About power sharpening machines
  • Shovels (and trowels), hoes and weeders, post hole digger, swing cutters
  • Pruners and lopers, by-pass and anvil cutters
  •  Knives and Axes

Selecting and maintaining tools

  • Steel types and uses
  • How to select a good tool
  • Keeping them rust free
