CARROTS!!! Farmstand Friday

Posted 3/29/2018 2:49pm by Christy and Chris Kantlehner.

Howdy folks!!

It's a great day to be alive!!! The Farm is starting to feel like it is taking a turn for Spring and we are all happy to be a part of it. Greenhouse is full, we skinned a caterpillar tunnel (put the plastic on) for planting fresh spinach this week. We also picked one high tunnel of spinach completely clean for all of you to enjoy all weekend. Those beds should be replanted to that fabulous lettuce that we use for salad mix by this afternoon! You can pre-order via the virtual market until Friday morning and you can start picking up orders or just dropping in beginning at noon. We usually have plenty of extra goods!  We are in the barn 12-6. Jordan Brothers Seafood will be there starting at 2pm, providing your Friday Fish Fix.  See you all soon!!!

Carrots.

Let's all celebrate the carrot this Easter weekend.  We are on the cusp of seeding our first carrots for the 2018 growing season, and our root cellar is still sustaining this vitamin-packed, vision-improving, tasty, orange, oblong root that is a favorite of the Easter bunny and humans alike.  The Carrot is such a versatile food.  Carrots can be used in soups, cakes, juices, side dishes, and salad. Pack it in your kids' lunches for a crunchy snack, or entertain guests with this star of the crudite. Here are a couple of great recipes I found online for you - excellent options for entertaining guests or adding to the table of your host during this holiday weekend.  Pick your favorite and enjoy the process as well as the result.  Please don't hesitate to share your favorite concoctions (in recipe or physical form) with your favorite farmers - we love carrot cake!

Starters: Silky Carrot Soup

This soup looks souper tasty, plus you can garnish with some boutoniere-worthy, gorgeous fresh herb tips that we will have for sale at farmstand.

Side dishes:

Braised Carrots and Shallots

We've got all this ingredients at the farmstand this week.  You can try substituting the chicken stock with apple cider or hard cider.  I have tried this before and it adds a nice little sweet zip.  Fairmount Fruit Farm Apple Cider is available at the farmstand.

Roasted Carrots

Franklin Honey Company has freshly supplied us with the local, raw honey you need for this serious show stopper of a dish.

Dessert:

Fancy - Coconut Carrot Cake Cheesecake

Now i am getting hungry, and I would love a report if anyone makes this cake.  Send pics, descriptions, stories or SAMPLES.

Simple -  Carrot Cake

Enjoy some baking this weekend.  Baking is a great activity to the for the whole family. Turn these carrots into something everyone will love.

Join our "BEET TEAM"

I have been going to see live music since I was 14.  One of my favorite family activities is going see some live music, dance, and have a good time.  Many times we are seeing smaller bands with a real grassroots support system.  One way they get the the word out is with a "street team."  Our version of this is the BEET TEAM.  We are looking for people to spread the good word of White Barn Farm.  We have printed some brochures and would love to see them in your yoga studio, gym, cross fit, wellness center, the office of your chiropractor, arborist, landscaper, small business or really workplace or public space of any kind. Let us know if you would like to take some brochures.  They will be available at the farmstand on Friday. If you belong to social groups (mom's groups, churches, book clubs, etc.) and would like to pass out brochures, they are available for you too!  White Barn Farm is truly a grassroots operation, and we need to market our farm with the help of all of these personal connections.  Word of mouth has created and sustained this little business, and we must keep that energy going.  Thank you in advance!!!
