Official CSA Email

Posted 4/12/2017 9:19pm by christy kantlehner.

Hello everyone! Here is an email trying to clarify our CSA program this year. Community Supported Agriculture is how White Barn Farm can grow vegetables on open space in the middle of suburbia. Your commitment to buy our produce or faith in us to pack you a delicious box of veggies each week is what allows us to operate our farm.

If you have participated in the Boxed CSA program in the past and would like to renew, consider this your call to action. We did not send out individual renewal notices this year because we are offering more shares than in the past so we do not have a waiting list. As explained at the bottom, we are making smaller shares and making more of them for the Boxed CSA seasons. During Summer Vacation we have the Farmstand CSA card option only. The best bet to renew is to do the Four Season Bundle deal.

Farmstand CSA Card

  • Get your payment in before May 1st, and receive a 10% bonus
  • $200 minimum. Cash or Check only.
  • Spend it on anything we sell at our farmstand.
  • Funds do not expire.
  • Keep your card and reload it each year.
  • Example: You write us a check for $300. You get a card with $330 to spend on whatever you want at the farmstand, whenever you want.
  • exceptions: you can't use your card to buy seafood or to buy plants during Plant Sale Weekend

Fill out a form so we know whether you have a card or not and where to send it if you need one.

Then, mail your check, payable to White Barn Farm, to:

White Barn Farm, P.O. Box 207, Wrentham, MA 02093

Boxed CSA Shares
“the weekly veggie box”
  • Three segments: Spring, Fall, and Winter
  • Pick up your share at the White Barn Farmstand
  • 458 South St., Wrentham, MA 02093
  • We can accommodate 100 shareholders for each season. Shares are filled on a first come – first serve basis.

Spring Share ~ 5 Weeks ~ $100 ~ Tuesdays 2pm – 6pm ~ May 23 – June 20

  • Low investment, short commitment
  • A great way to make sure you eat lots of fresh salads, cooking greens, crunchy tender roots, and fresh herbs
  • Ends at the same time Summer Vacation begins – so you don’t have to worry about missing pick-ups when you go away or your routine becomes less predictable
  • Great way to discover vegetables you may not have chosen on your own
  • Payment due by May 1st

{Summertime} – Get a Farmstand CSA card and come buy produce at the farmstand whenever we are open – 6 days a week! We will make a “Suggested Summer Share” chalkboard for those of you who want direction.

Fall Share ~ 6 weeks ~ $120 ~ Tuesdays 2pm – 6pm ~ September 5 – October 10

  • Back to School - Routine Resumes – veggie boxes return!
  • Transition from the treasures of late summer – tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini - to the hearty fall harvest – roots, winter squash, and cooking greens. Always salad ingredients, something from the onion family, and fresh herbs.
  • Again – an excellent way to school yourself on what’s in season locally and how to best enjoy it. We send an email each week with a description of the box and a few recipes we recommend.
  • Payment due by August 1st

Winter Share ~ 5 pickups over 10 weeks ~ $200 ~ FRIDAYS 2pm – 6pm

Bi-weekly: October 20, November 3, November 17, December 1, December 15

  • Pickup is at the barn, where we will also be having our farmstand during the colder months
  • You will pack your own box, following instructions on the signs, weighing out or taking a certain number of the given item.
  • This share is meant to last two weeks so it packs a much fuller box than the spring or fall share. As long as everything is stored properly, it should keep beautifully.
  • This share begins after the usual first frost – so only the cold-hardiest fresh veggies (spinach, kale, mustard mix, pea tendrils, perhaps lettuce, fennel, broccoli in the first few distributions) will be included, but there will be lots of storage crops: cabbage, carrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, onions, potatoes, leeks, garlic, celery root, beets, turnips, winter radishes, kohlrabi, and so on. Payment due by October 1st

Four-Season Bundle Deal

  • If you sign up for spring, fall, and winter AND buy a minimum Farmstand CSA card of $200 before May 1st, we will give you a 10% discount on the boxed shares.
  • (the math is a little weird – but it comes to $378 plus whatever amount you want to load onto your CSA card, which gets a 10% bonus anyway)
  • This is the best substitute we came up with for our previous Boxed CSA program which spanned most of the season and cost $625. Each share is designed to be smaller (approx. $20 of produce vs. $28 it used to be). CSA pick-ups begin at the same time as ever, but with the winter share CSA distributions continue until halfway through December, and cost less. The number one reason people say they discontinue the Boxed CSA is that they can’t use all of the produce – so we are making the shares smaller in hopes of meeting the needs of our very busy and  hard-working customers.
